Player's Log: A Few Rambles About our Thursday Night Strahd Game

So we've been playing Curse of Strahd on Thursday nights with my dear friend Brian as the dungeon master. Naturally, since this is a big old ramble about Curse of Strahd there are spoilers ahead if you haven't played it, so click at your own risk.

Torchlighters: Samael Trezza Character Interview

Last week I did one of these for Callum, so now I'm going to go ahead and tackle one for Samael, his older brother and another point of view character in Torchlighters. This time I'm using a different set of interview questions, also found over yonder at a slightly adjacent address.

As always, I encourage you to head over there and take a look at the source material but for the time being, let's get to it.

Some Thoughts on the Nature of Souls

Souls aren't something you're just given by nature of walking this world. Souls are a thing to be collected and accumulated, something to be earned over time, and they aren't a thing that belongs exclusively to humans and animals.

I'm writing this at my mother's house. I grew up here. I remember waking up and getting ready for school here every morning, watching cartoons and eating blueberry waffles, and dancing around the living room to Livin' La Vida Loca. I remember my family being very different then. This house has earned its soul over years of people living in it.

There were carpets, then, and there aren't now. It was cleaner. All the furniture was different. The house has grown as much as we have, and the love this family shares is woven in the walls and in the spirit of this place. Anything can be like that, earning a soul, through wear, through use, through being loved.

What You Are Actually Paying For When You Get a Tarot Reading

Alright so I've had this one rattling around in my head for a few days now and found the time to go ahead and hammer it out. I haven't written a crapton here on the witchy side of things, and tarot is very important to me.

It's pretty well known in witchy circles that it's not accepted as okay to charge for a spell, but it is acceptable to charge for tarot readings. I know a lot of people that don't understand the distinction, and I just want to plop down some of my thoughts about that.

Hang on to your butts.

Worldbuilding: Things I Learned About Wind

Alright, listen up. I was working on my Tal'Guara map the other night (I've been working on it as a setting for a long time but I'm not ready to properly do anything with it yet, expect more ramblings on this subject later) and I was thinking about the concept of people swearing on the seas.

You see, in Tal'Guara, there are some people bound to animal spirits and I was thinking the ones bound to aquatic ones would probably take waters fairly seriously. Then it stands to reason, the avian spirits would swear by the winds. Now I had no idea how wind worked and realized 'well crap, now I have to research that', so I did.

As it turns out, there weren't any convenient worldbuilding documents out there to help me learn only as much as I needed to know about wind to name some important ones for my imaginary place. Well, I'm about to remedy that for y'all. Hang on to your butts.

Boosted Things All Authors Have to Deal With at Some Point

Writing. Sometimes it's hard. Sometimes you stare at the screen for hours and want to throw coffee onto your monitor. Sometimes you just can't and it takes hours to get the fire started. Sometimes, this is all made easier by supportive friends and family.

Other times, those friends and family are going to make you want to rip your hair out.

Torchlighters: Callum Trezza Character Interview

There's a handy dandy list of questions to ask your character over yonder and I'm really digging how in depth it is. I did say I'd be rambling about these characters and this setting quite a bit, so while I'm going to be editing the questions just a smidge to make them fit the setting better, hopefully this will help me and you get to know my protagonist better.

Obviously I highly endorse clicking that link up there and giving the original post some love, this has been super useful to me and I bet it will be for you, too.

Life Happens: Write Around It

So my fiance and I just broke down on a bridge in the middle of nowhere and both of our phones were dead. This involved a 20 minute walk alone (one of us had to stay with the car) in the dark down town gearing myself up to stab someone with an ink pen in case they thought I made a tempting target (spoiler alert, that didn't happen), to get to a phone to call for help.

I still haven't finished my word count, but as soon as I'm done with this blog entry that's exactly what I'm going to turn around and do. That said, I realized some things today during said 20 minute walk that I feel are important and I'm the kind of boosted animal that's going to share them all with you fine folks.

Torchlighters: I've Got Cover Art!

Let me take a moment to tell you a little about my current Work in Progress. I have been instructed recently that marketing is supposed to start before release day so let me tease this one a little bit.

So imagine it's the 1920's, but everything is demon powered. And the protagonists are mobsters.

Have I caught you yet? Come with me for a minute.
